The internet can be a scary place but, it can also be a helpful learning tool. As a homeschooling parent (and teacher), I often use the internet to help teach subjects that are tough for me or, to expand on topics that we have already covered. If used correctly, the internet can open up a whole new world of learning for your students. Here are some of my favorite educational websites for my homeschoolers.
Be Internet Awesome
This website is geared towards elementary aged students. Be Internet Awesome teaches kids through games how to be mindful and safe on the internet.
Khan Academy
Khan Academy is perfect for both students and teachers. You will find videos, practice problems, and worksheets along with full lessons. All of these things can be translated into 40 languages aside from English. My favorite thing about this is that it is a free resource.
Education.com
Education.com has tons of activities for preschool-aged kids all the way through 5th grade. Here you will find printable worksheets, interactive lessons, educational games, guided lessons and lesson plans. You do have to register to use the website but that is free. You can choose to print off your monthly limit of worksheets or, you can pay a subscription fee for an unlimited number of prints.
Crayola
Crayola has an area on its website for education. Here you will find resources for standards-based educational lessons, development for educators and projects for students as well. These resources include things like technique, crafts, and activities for preschoolers all the way up to 12th graders.
Exploratorium
The Exploratorium is a public learning laboratory for all ages in San Francisco, California. Online they offer around 35,000 pages of educational material that focuses on Science and math. All of which can be used for free.
Common Sense Media
This site provides reviews for movies, TV shows, apps, and other educational tools written by teachers. You can also find ready to use lesson plans, videos, and webinars. This website is a valuable resource for homeschool parents and non-homeschool parents.
Google Earth
Google Earth is a great way to travel the world without actually having to leave your house. You can use Google Earth to study the desert, check out Lady Liberty or even things closer to home.
San Diego Zoo Kids
The San Diego Zoo is the perfect resource for learning about different animals. Lesson plans, games, fun facts and detailed information on several different animal species. One of my favorite things about this website is the live feeds of different animals that it offers.
Flocabulary
Flocabulary follows both national and state standards for various subjects. The coolest part of this website is that all of the lessons are presented in the form of a rap song.
TeacherTube
TeacherTube is a safe spot for teachers (and parents) to find educational videos on an assortment of topics. TeacherTube takes away any worry of coming across anything inappropriate.
NewseumED
By signing up for a free NewseumED account you will have access to lesson plans, activities and educational resources that focus on media civics and literacy. It is a virtual stockpile of historical videos, artifacts and other resources. NewseumED is geared towards students in 3rd grade and up.
PowToon
PowToon has made making short animated clips easier than ever. All the student needs to do is write the script, place the graphics and characters were needed with the drag and drop tool. I like that the drag and drop graphics tool is very easy to use. With this site, the possibilities are never-ending.
Teaching Tolerance
Here you will find the ‘tough stuff’, the subjects and concepts that are hard to teach about. You will find activities and teaching kits on a wide array of tough topics like religion, bullying, migration and many more.
Prodigy
Prodigy gives teachers the ability to create a math game based on their current needs. Students need to solve the math problems to continue the quest. Prodigy allows teachers to track the student’s progress as they go and can even give placement tests through the website.
